How To Clean And Maintain Your Exhaust

How to Clean and Maintain Your Exhaust
Our exhaust systems are built to last, but they need your help. Here's how to keep your system running smoothly:
1. Cleaning
It is essential to frequently clean your exhaust to prevent rusting hardware and valve seizure. Use a power washer or pressure nozzle to remove dirt from under your vehicle. To clean exhaust tips, rinse off loose dirt with water, apply soap and remove dirt with a microfiber cloth. For stronger soot stains inside the tips, spray degreaser, wipe off soot, and rinse with water. Rinse the valves and wipe excess dirt with a microfiber cloth if necessary. Complete thorough cleaning at least biweekly, or as soon as possible if your vehicle is exposed to road salt or other contaminants.
2. Maintenance
As with any moving part exposed to the elements, valves can experience issues such as seizure or rattling. If the valve fails to open or close, or makes a noise when doing so, spray WD-40 onto the valve assembly and manually open and close the valve with your hand until it is loosened. If you experience a rattling valve, that means there is not enough tension between the valve spring and the valve body. To fix this, remove the exhaust valves, cycle them to fully closed, and reinstall.
